What inspired you to pursue a career in ad tech/marketing, and how did you get started in the industry?
I started my career in B2B ad tech sales and quickly learned that sales was not the right fit for me. I was drawn to marketing based on internships and part-time jobs I’d had in college, so I pursued roles in digital marketing. That expanded into focusing on digital media buying and planning. I enjoy the challenge of solving problems and continuously learning, and marketing offers similar aspects. Its involves growing businesses, understanding consumer behavior, and leveraging digital paid strategies and tactics to drive business. With digital marketing there’s also the aspect of being data driven, using research and insights to inform your strategy. This combination of creativity and analytical thinking keeps me engaged and motivated in my career.
Can you share a pivotal moment in your career that helped shape you as a leader?
Early in my career, I remember putting up a direct report for promotion because they had been doing a great job and I wanted to reward them for being a great performer. The promotion was rejected, with a response that doing a good job is expected and that it wasn’t enough. It motivated me to better understand the role of HR and understand the systems, programs and roles for career development and promotion. No one taught me this but in turn, I want to provide better clarity for my team and provide the guidance I learned through trial & error. I have also been inspired to participate in mentoring programs at my company and through networking groups so I can share my learnings and provide that guidance I wish I’d had.
What do you believe are the most important qualities of an effective leader in the ad tech/marketing space?
I believe an effective leader needs to be open to continuous learning and improvement. The dynamic nature of the ad tech/marketing space means there’s always something new to learn, which makes it challenging and exciting. But its import to be humble and willing to admit when you don’t know something. Additionally, collaboration and networking are key aspects. They help build strong relationships where working together with others can lead to innovative solutions and drive success. An effective leader fosters an environment where team members feel valued and encouraged to share their ideas and perspectives.
What advice would you give to young women looking to enter ad tech or any other technology-driven field?
My advice is to never be afraid to speak up, ask questions, and contribute to conversations. Many times I have been one of the few women in a meeting, and it can be intimidating to voice my thoughts or offer a different perspective. It might seem like the loudest voice wins, but it’s important to push yourself to take space and be heard. I’ve learned that practice and repetition will build confidence over time, so don’t hesitate to jump in and speak up. Your unique insights are valuable and needed in the tech industry.
If there’s a woman who has inspired or mentored you in your career, can you share that story?
While I haven’t had the opportunity to work directly with many women leaders, I have been inspired by female leaders in other departments and companies I’ve been associated with. Observing their qualities and leadership styles has been incredibly valuable. Additionally, I want to acknowledge the supportive bosses I’ve had, who have provided essential guidance and encouragement for my career growth. Their support has been instrumental in my professional development.
